Even though many newspapers are closing, you could get into your own business right away with very little investment if you're willing to sell ads and create a "penny pincher" weekly (maybe with other feature articles). You'd have to be good at marketing, layout, and distribution. My son did this as a senior in h.s. and made quite a bit of money. It could build up to something bigger in the future. This you can do in a coastal town outside of Portland.

Portland, Oregon, was actually named after Portland, Maine.

As you know, journalism is a tough field to get into these days. Many of my old friends from J-School have gone on to other careers. However, I was surprised to see so many newspapers in our area. In addition to the Press Herald, we have the Portland Daily Sun and the Forecaster newspapers. The Bangor Daily News is now covering the Portland area, too. We have an alternative weekly, the Portland Phoenix, and the Bollard, which features excellent in-depth articles. We also have the monthly Portland Magazine, in addition to the statewide Downeast and Maine magazines.

Here are some websites:

Maine news, sports, weather & breaking news | The Portland Press Herald / Maine Sunday Telegram

Portland Daily Sun | News from Portland, Maine's Daily Newspaper.

Southern Maine news, obituaries, and sports | The Forecaster

Maine news, sports, politics and obituaries — Bangor Daily News — BDN Maine

The Bollard: Portland, Maine

The Portland Phoenix

Portland Monthly Magazine

What kind of area are you looking to live in? Urban, suburban, rural? For specific info on Portland, I would suggest searching and posting in the Portland forum:

Good luck!

Default Job opening

Please direct message me with your email address and I will send you information about a job opening at our newspaper.

And, for the record , the weekly newspaper business (Moosehead Messenger aside) is thriving in Maine and New England. New Englanders are avid consumers of news and are still avid buyers of print newspapers. Don't write our obituaries yet!

And it's a shame about the Messenger. I always had this silly fantasy about coming into money, moving to Greenville, buying the Messenger and living happily ever after.

I don't know anyone that doesn't read the Piscatquis Observer or Uncle Henry's in Dover. Plus they get the Bangor paper too. And yes, they all have those new fangled computers too.
