Default If Farmington looks good . . . that's good, but don't dismiss Orono.

Thanks...
Your post caught my attention, because I'm looking into programs in creative writing myself. In my case, I'm looking at graduate programs, and UMaine at Orono is one school I'm seriously considering applying to. Since they don't have a graduate program in the field at Farmington, I know you're looking at a bachelor's program, and if I remember correctly you can actually get a degree in creative writing at Farmington, rather than a degree in English with a cw concentration. What kind of town or city works best as a place to live, as well as what size school works best, is a matter of personal preference. There's some good info people have provided here, and if Farmington sounds good to you, great. If something more like a medium-sized university in a town like Orono might work for you, definitely consider the Orono campus. I'm not sure, but I don't believe they have a separate major in creative writing at Orono at the undergraduate level. However, from my research into their graduate program, I can tell you that it looks as if Orono has a first-rate faculty in the field. You might well be able to find what you need there, by doing an English major with an emphasis on cw classes.

By the way, you may already have discovered this, but if not, I'll tell you that the website for the Farmington campus has a section where they give some details of interest to students about life in Farmington--activities in the area, what businesses there are downtown (and how much the typical purchases cost there), and the like. Check it out if you haven't already. It may help you get some answers to your questions about that area.

I know from experience that this is a difficult, but very fulfilling, goal you want to pursue. Best wishes.

My niece went to UMF and she loved it. She's from Cape Cod MA, and the first semester she thought she would go nuts, but she just graduated and is considering moving to Maine. The school is very diverse, although at her graduation there weren't a lot of kids of color...but it's a very open minded school. She loved it. She studied journalism, made tons of great friends, and had a wonderful experience. I wish you the best if you go and hope it's all you want it to be. Good luck!
