Thanks, Molly and NMLM!
Molly, thanks for the kind words. Be assured I'll be keeping you all posted during the transition. I'm glad to find some folks who care and who know what's going on.
NMLMan, this is just one more example of how inane it is to try to create any sort of standardized test that's supposed to work from Maine to Alaska to Hawaii, California and Florida. There are just too many often subtle (like your tripod) cultural differences.
That's a great story. I've found that most Mainers do much of their lovely living with a huge amount of elan. That's a big factor in why I want to join you all.
Thanks.
Stephen

Stephen, we live in Belfast in the summer although we spent most of the year there last year. Belfast is a great place. The year rounders are a very diverse group, friendly, and open on the most part. We have friends who are gay that live in Stockton Springs. They love it there and have other gay friends in the community but have lots of straight friends as well. They are also involved in a number of community activities in Belfast and are accepted just as anyone else. There appears to be plenty of good housing options in Belfast and the surrounding areas. I am sorry I can't be more specific regarding housing but I think you will easily find a suitable place to live in no time. There are lots of good vets too including a holistic one so you will have no trouble finding good care for your poodle. Good luck with your move! I hope you like living there. We think it is a pretty special place!

Thank you, Dee!
You folks certainly are friendly. I can't wait to get back to Maine. Besides not being very bright, way too many of these Westerners (God help us, all the cowboy wannabes!) are testy and nasty. Growing up in the Midwest, I'd always heard about crusty New Englanders and I just haven't found that to be the case at all.
Dee, I particularly appreciated your comments about the vets in the Belfast area. My darling Mandy is aging (she's eleven, but all of our poodles have been very long-lived --- one reached 25),so I suspect Miss Amanda will be around yet for awhile; of course good care, including vet visits are essential.
Thanks again.

Hey,
I'm a gay, ex-Mainer as well and am also hoping to move back. My partner and I have recentely purchased land outside of Blue Hill, which is not that far from Belfast. Blue Hill has several art galleries and is close to Ellsworth. It has a classical music venue in the summer, coastal scenery, and an old money feel. I like it because it well off route 1. I'm 37 and my partner is 46. We aren't going to be moving up for a few years, but we rent a place near Blue Hill for a week each summer and have been improving our land. It is an artsy community and I feel comfortable there.

Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul and Mary owns a large old chicken house in Blue Hill which he has converted to a studio. I met Paul and Mary just before Christmas in 64 at the Castaways Bar in St. Thomas. We had a grand old "Hootnanny" that night and into the wee hours of the next day. I don't know if they ever had other spontaneous concerts or sing-alongs or if they were noted for that, but for a few of us that was a magic night.
Blue Hill is indeed an artsy town. Sailing ships come into the harbor and anchor for the night during windjammer cruises. People come ashore to restaurants and clubs. Blue Hill Falls is an interesting place with reversing falls. The water falls in with the rising tide and out with the falling tide. Kayakers have a ball there.
