I'm looking at the possibility of moving to Maine (looks like Augusta at the moment) and I'd like to know what the consensus is for internet service and TV offerings.

I use MagicJack for my phone needs, so I won't need a traditional phone service but I must have broadband in order for MJ to work.
I have U-Verse where I am but AT&T tell me Maine doesn't have this up there and doesn't plans to. U-verse is flawless and I've never had to call AT&T for anything. Costs me about $50 a month.
(I used to have Time Warner, who must be the worst bunch of indifferent cretins and morons every put in charge of any kind of company, and who pretend to offer a "service").
I'm never going back to them, never, never, never.......ever.

I also have a cheap cell phone service (Tracfone) and I rarely make any calls on it unless I can't avoid it.
I have it mainly for emergency/urgent calls/while driving and to show me who is calling (I also use Google Voice).

I am not willing to pay $40 (or more) per month for TV as most of it is junk, so whatever free channels I can get with an indoor antenna, that's fine.
I also don't want any contracts or commitments for anything.

I would appreciate your views on the internet service and what you would suggest for a cheap person like me.

I'm quite a frugal person so I want to stat that way in Maine, which I heard has frugality in its DNA - is this true?

You will probably get Fairpoint here in Maine, and whatever Fairpoint provides where you chose to live. We have had good service with this company, but remember, dsl isn't available everywhere yet.

I can't get DSL here from Fairpoint(Abbot) so I have a wireless device for that purpose, but thats $50 a month. I also have DTV but am looking around because thats $86 a month with no movie channels! Maine is NOT a cheap place to live, thats for sure.

Down here on the coast we use Comcast for tv, internet, and landline phone and haven't had any issues that couldn't be resolved with a call to customer service. My only complaint is that it's bloody expensive. If my wife wasn't addicted to New England sports teams, I'd drop it in an instant. If you're not interested in cable tv, I don't know if you can get internet service from the cable provider in Augusta -- something to check out. Augusta being the state capital, though, it has most of the usual bells and whistles for electronic comms.

I have a Roku box for the same purpose. Works great if your not a gamer and don't have wii. I also get the MLB premium package to watch BB games on. You guys are lucky and get to see the Sox for free! Lots of channels available, free music and like you say, netflicks.I agree with the OP, Time Warner renewed me automatically until 2013 without my knowledge. Customer service is not present. I'm sure it was in the fineprint.

For anyone who is interested, this news story says Netflix will be moving away from movies to TV shows. Once Film-Focused, Netflix Transitions to TV Shows - Yahoo! Finance (http://finance.yahoo.com/news/once-film-focused-netflix-transitions-174008412.html - broken link)

Mainebrokerman, I know about that but I pay for usage thru my wireless, so I think it would end up more expensive to watch movies on my pc. And I quite like living in the "sticks"...lol
