Not a whole lot of anything around Caswell if it is the one I'm thinking of. About halfway between Fort Fairfield and Limestone? I guess it would depend on what type of recreation you are talking about.

Up until this very moment, I have never heard of Caswell, Maine. Maybe for a recreational property that's a very good thing.

ive been thru caswell many times,,believe its a small town that paralells the st john river,,between maine and canada,,between limestone and fort fairfield,
its a nice area,,canadiens do come across,,,,,but as a recreation area?? depends on the recreation,,
way up north in aroostook county is some of the best ,,wide-open big sky country in maine,,,snowmobiling is huge,,some of the best trails in new england are up there,
but to try to "draw" folks up to that particular town,,its kinda remote,,
if i were looking for recreational investment property in maine,,id be looking at the sherman/patten/island falls area, property is still relatively inexpensive, and baxter state park and mount katadhin is nearby as are lakes.
and most travelling north to houlton, presque isle, caribou, even ashland, eagle lake and fort kent, have to travel thru these areas.
these areas are already recreational destinations,,,but very very unspolied!

Caswell is north of Limestone on the way to Hamlin and Madawaska. The Air Force had a radar station there when Loring Air Force Base was active. Back in the mid-1980s some real estate guy from Texas bought the entire station -- it's essentially a mini-town, with its own housing areas, sewer and water systems and other amenities --- sight unseen to market as recreational properties. Not sure what came of that.
Anyway, this is what I found online. The part about growing hops is fascinating.
The Town of Caswell, Maine
Caswell, originally known as the Township of F.R. 1, was organized as Pleasant Ridge Plantation in 1878. The town was reorganized in 1879 and was named after the first settler, R.S. Caswell. The Township consisted of a six- mile square land plot and was considered a good piece of land by Caswell. The land was rich and fertile with plenty of timber for use in building homes. Charles Herd, one of the first settlers after Caswell moved in with his family and other settlers followed.
Between the years 1899 and 1926, there were five small schools in Caswell. In 1927, the Pleasant Ridge School got its start, grades 1 through 8 attended this three- room school. In 1928, St Mary's School was built and in 1974, a new school was built for all of the Caswell students and St Mary's School was closed. The building is still standing but is now privately owned. Children from grades 1 through 7 now attend classes in the new Caswell Elementary School. Students from grade 8 up are transported to Limestone High School.
In 1890, hops were grown for making beer. Major crops consisted of potatoes, hay, oats and buckwheat. Sheep, cattle, swine and poultry were also raised at each of the small farms in Caswell. Today, much of the cropland is used for growing potatoes and peas. Oats are still grown on some farms.
Shortly after Loring Air Force Base in Limestone, Maine was constructed, a radar station was built in Caswell on land which the government purchased around 1951. The highest number of men assigned to the station was 150.

I knew a guy had property in Caswell. He grew a good sized cash crop there in the summer. A lot of people knew about it but didn't care, an older gent actually went and watered them for him a few times when he noticed they were getting too dry.
