Yes, generally it's true that people would more likely be interested or curious, or even charmed by an accent they weren't used to hearing locally.

I have loved reading this thread this morning. Lots of great (and some very funny) comments and insights. I think northernmaineman is on to something with the cold theory and I'm not surprised it intrigued his linguist friend.

I have to tell you though, I'm from Seattle originally (lived on the west coast and Alaska for 26 years before moving to Virginia, North Carolina and now Ilinois) and Tucson is pulling your leg. There is no such thing as a "western accent".
