Nothing against Milo, I've eaten there many times. If you are going to start a pub or eatery you have to do your research. That includes not only population, but demographics. You get what you pay for and are willing to invest. Areas that are north of Bangor and the coast have very different demographics.

Dover-Foxcroft is the county seat with good schools and a hospital, but still lacks a tremendous population base. Even Greenville can be better, but is heavily tourist dependent, although some have failed miserably, I know of several restaurant and pubs that are booming.

Piscataquis county in general lacks jobs and disposable income. Bangor-Ellsworth corridor to the mid-coast has the best opportunities for success, in my opinion.

It would appear that Maine as a whole is a fairly strong economy in the context of operating a small business since we rank #8 in the nation for Small Business Investment - SBIC Financing to businesses by state, reported in dollars per worker

I'm so excited about that bit of info that David brought to our attention yesterday - thank you! I emailed it to most of my family! Also had to rub in the fact that Texas FAILED. I was appalled at the score for education Texas received, though not a bit surprised.

I am excited about it too.

I have already emailed it to everyone in Maine that I deal with.

I am going to get a lot of mileage from that site.

Milo is experiencing a "mini-boom" a lot of the older homes are being bought and refurbished by empty nesters from "away" and from southern Maine. The people next door to me on the one side are from Boston, Ma. area... they sold their home and bought an old victorian (cash) and are slowly bringing it back. On the other side is the towns pharmacist, from southern Me. She decided to bring her kids to the area because the population is dramatically lower and the teacher/student ratio was much better. I realize it's not Portland, and you don't have the volume of customers, but you also don't have the volume of competitors. Meh,... to each his own.

Two very popular restaurants closed in Bangor in the recent past: Pilots Grill and Millers. I think you can find a following!

I noticed the same thing in Eastport. A lot more homes had been refurbished and a lot less store fronts are empty. It was nice to see such a great rebound in just 4 years.
