I have not heard of Pilots Grill or Millers. Where were they?

Miller's was downtown where the Racino building is now, and Pilot's Grill was on outer Hammond Street, a short way from the bowling alley. Both restaurants had been around for a VERY long time, but were losing customers. Their menus never really updated through the years, and though we went back trying to give them a chance, their food wasn't all that great.

Default Bangor

Bangor has been a tough spot for restuarants over the past decade, but the new and much larger racino opening next year will draw hundreds of thousands of people.

Once they(racino) vacate the Millers Rest. building it's expected that John Miller will reopen.

Smokey Bones failed all over the state and New England and mostly from poor management and they were the latest movers on the "informal steak house" franchise boom.

Restaurants like Pilots Grill and the Greenhouse were throwbacks to the days of formal dining...new modern upscale venues have taken over. The New Moon is a great example of that market niche.

The hospitality scene, excluding the chain restaurants at the Bangor Mall, are either in downtown or the waterfront. While space on the waterfront is non-existent(because there is no development yet), downtown Bangor has many historic brick buildings at below market rates. In the last 12 months two new irish pubs have opened within 40 feet of the Whig & Courier. This has driven a mini-boom in Bangor nightlife by creating a small "district" in downtown. There are several other spaces that restaurants and bars are looking at nearby that could contribute to a healthy hospitality district.

We are bullish on Bangor, but recommend securing a advantageous lease. There are 3 other restaurants in Bangor that are either distressed or for sale that could allow a new owner to open at auction prices.

While the Bangor restaurant scene is not a 7 day/week, a small well executed German pub could succeed.

Just my opinion.

You may want to look up Ingrid at Ingrid's German Giftshop on Buck Street in Bangor. Her husband runs the Greenhouse and Flower Shop next door. I'm sure they'd have some tips!
