I'm going to be passing through Springfield and Albany, and am trying to decide which place to spend the night. Is Springfield a fairly safe area, and is there safe shopping there (mostly malls)?

Thanks.

Is that Springfield MA and Albany NY, (or are there Maine towns with those names)? I have family that lived in Springfield MA.....it always felt safe to me....my partner and I came across NY state this past summer...we never felt the least bit like we had entered a "bad" area....we didnt do any shopping so I cant tell you about that. The only place that gave off bad vibes was Erie Pennsylvania.....it was late when we stopped and we had trouble finding lodging and the Red Roof Inn was sketchy at best (clearly the door had been jimmied and broken...it was a scary place.. and the available restuarants were terrible.

Sorry, Springfield Mass. Did you stay at the Red Roof in Springfield?

No that was in Erie Pennsylvania.......we didnt stop in Springfield we were pushing on home to Maine! I have only stayed over in Springfield one time and that was in a private home in a nice suburban area. It really has been too long ago for my impressions of Springfield to have much usefulness.

If you get off I-90 in West Springfield and go south about 1/2 mile on Route 5 there is a good hotel on the right and it is quite reasonable.

Do not spend the night in Springfield, MA, esp any place downtown.
Springfield has something like the third highest gang murder rate in the country, and a lot happens in the downtown n'hoods. Try Pittsfield, MA, on the way to Albany.

I would look to stay in Chicopee or maybe West Springfield rather than Springfield proper. They are safer and have ample shopping/lodging around.

Also why aren't you asking this in the MA forum?

Springfield is safe as can be,if you are just looking for overnight lodgingi would recomend the Marriot or Sheraton downtown or the hotel at Basketball HOF complex. All of which are right off of 91,as far as the hotels or motels on rt 5 in West Springfield,i would steer clear of most of them. They are for the most part all sketchy places, most house people who are waiting for permanent housing through sect 8. While i don't want to judge people I live in WS and can tell you that there is lots of problems at these places IE drugs, domestic issues , partying in the parking lots and theft. In West Springfield the only place i would recommend would be the Hampton Inn(i think that is what it is) on the northbound side of rt 5 that is part of the shopping center.
As far as Albany goes there is no need to stop in both places as they are barely 2 hours apart,or were you trying to decide on the two places as a stopping point.

Shopping around Springfield is decent, you have the Holyoke mall which is New englands 2nd largest mall. Rt 5 in West Springfield has some shopping as well, just south of Springfield in Enfield CT there is also the same type of mall shopping. Also to the west in the Berkshires there is the Lee Premium Outlets in Lee on the way towards Albany.
