You might like to read this story from the Bangor Daily News about someone else who moved to Calais. It was in last Saturday's edition.
Calais: Small-town community makes life worthwhile for lawyer
Weather is coastal, more moderate than you'll see a few miles up the road in places like West Grand Lake or even Baileyville. Still the chance for plenty of snow in the winter, though. First frost varies from late Sept to mid-Oct, with some frost pockets getting white ground already. Bring or get your passport, so you can cross into Canada for movies and events over there.
As for what to do, I'm not sure. Doesn't Molly live up that way?

Thanks. My husband might be building the new Border Station in Calais. We live in Mass. right now and if they get the job we will be there for about 2 years.

Foliage season is at its peak the first full week of October. Calais is a nice town with a good hospital, stores, car dealers and a WalMart. There are many recreational opportunities for a family that likes the outdoors and if you have not lived by the ocean before the tides alone will fascinate you for two years.
I bet you'll stay. After he's done building the border station he can build the new natural gas plant in the next town. Then he can build the new community college expansion. Heck, Calais is a career opportunity.

Calais is a great small town with a good sense of community. It's a fantastic place for kids and families. Northern Maine Land Man is right, if you enjoy the outdoors you will like it here. BUT, if you enjoy malls, shopping, lots of restaurant choices, concerts, etc....you will have to drive to find that type of lifestyle!
Do you have any kids? Do you work outside the home? What do you like to do for fun? Your time here in Calais may be more enjoyable if you have kids in school allowing you to get out into the community, or if you work, and you meet more people through work.

I'll add my favorable vote for Calais too. It's where I go for monthly grocery shopping, to fill a prescription and some gift shopping. Urban Moose is an awesome shop. There are other nice shops along the main street. A new restaurant is going to open soon. It will feature locally grown foods. The area revolves around basketfall through February. There's never a lack of things to do.

Thanks for all the information about Calais. It's nice to hear what other people think. I do have kids. My oldest is in school. We live in a small town now so hopefully we will fit right in. Love to shop but also love the outdoors too. We will be driving up in a few weeks to check it out.

Well, that's good to know JBLB! Being a lover of the outdoors seems to be a requirement of happy living in Maine....the shopping you can still do online! and a trip to Bangor or St. John helps too I think you'll be happy with the school dept, we are. I have 4 kids in school, 3 in high school and one at the elem school. Best wishes!

It's a great place..we have restaurants, gas stations, hardware stores, walmart, mardens and the duty free store even sells awesome gifts, perfumes that are usually only found in finer dept. stores, chocolates..etc. If you're bored w/ shopping in the United States...the Supermarket in Canada is incredible...seems less than 1.5 miles away...there's also an indoor aqua ctr for children and families if you don't mind a little drive. St. Andrews by the Sea has fine dining at the Sheraton. Golfing on both sides....it's great!
