hate to go
Hi folks, my hubby is taking a job in Bangor. Although we've only lived In Presque Isle for 17 years, I'm very happy with our home here. Our kids are grown and have moved to Portland.
I really hate the idea of trying to find a comparable home in the greater Bangor area. So many people and cars and although I like the shopping opportunity, it's get in and get out. I'd love some advice from you folks in the area as to friendly communities in the area. We'd love a home on water especially but oow that $$$. thanks for any advice

I'm very interested in your post. I'm not sure if I should feel happy or sad for you! We're so used to people on here mulling over moving TO Maine - never had a discussion that I remember with someone moving WITHIN Maine.
I'm anxious to see how things play out for you. It will be an interesting comparison. Good luck to you with the decision process you'll be in for a time. I'm sure everything will work out the way it should!

Take out your DeLorme Atlas and look at Bangor. Property north of Bangor is more reasonable than south. Then look at the roads going directly to and from Bangor, You won't want to be on those roads because of heavy traffic. Now look at the roads that ring Bangor. That's where you'll find your new place.

rental?
Right now, I guess the idea is focusing on rentals. <$700, 2 bedrooms. Close to getting to work in downtown Bangor. Or purchasing a small fixer upper. He looked at a tiny place on French Island this afternoon. The concern is in getting me to give up what we have here when I don't know the area or anyone down there. We don't want to commit without being sure of what we're getting into. A temporary housing would allow me to sit tight up here until things are more settled. Does this make any sense?

It makes sense but is it just prolonging the inevitable? What needs to be more settled?
So often we visit areas, and only see a small part of that area, and make a judgement based on what we've seen. The problem occurs when the area seen is not an accurate reflection. I think that's what's happened with you and Bangor. I'd suggest you read through some of the old threads on here...Bangor is mentioned a great deal. Up in the right hand corner of your screen you'll see an area that says "search"....type in Bangor and see what comes up It won't help you being sad that you're leaving your home, but I think it will help you feel better about where you're headed.

If you're going to live in a small community I recommend Veazie. It borders Bangor. I grew up there. Public transportation runs through town. It's very close to the hospital and mall without being in the middle of that traffic. Orono is nice and not much further to downtown. Glenburn, Levant, Corinth and Kenduskeg are more rural and an easy drive to downtown.
I like the downtown area. I worked in the Superior Court House when I worked there. There's a new farmers market, I think on Thursdays, nice shops, a book store, the public library and much more. I couldn't live downtown but it's a nice place to spend some time.
Don't forget crossing the river as an option. I have friends who live in Orrington and love it. Good luck!

moving
I'm glad to have found this site. The messages you folks have sent me have been interesting and helpful. I read the messages from folks talking about Bangor but I can't say it changed my mind at all. The suggestions of towns, communities are terrific. Certainly it is a huge challenge to go through this from a distance. Dave is looking at the real estate ads in the Bangor Daily. He's hoping to contact an ERA Realtor today. He'll be full time down there this coming Monday. So far the good places, for rent have gone very quickly. I have to wonder if he'll have better luck when he is in town, staying at a hotel. I'll be keeping the home fires burning here in PI.

I think you'll be pleased to find that there are many people from The County in the Bangor area. We have been happy with our realtor from ERA Dawson: Barbara Houston.

Dave committed this morning to a rental home in downtown Bangor. It's the home of a couple who are wintering in Florida. So he'll have from mid October to April to continue his search for something on the permanent side.
