We drove up in July and had targeted Ellsworth and surrounding areas. Liked the proximity to Acadia National Park. Found a few pieces of land we liked; one was on Union River but was under 2 acres for over 100K, the fresher lakes (with loons had houses/cottages just a little too close together - so we thought we might get more for our money if we went a little closer to Bangor. We like rural - but appreciate access to culture and artsy stuff too.

it's true you could go in that direction, but you could also try going toward Milbridge and Cherryfield....small coastal towns, little further from Bangor, but not too much. Also, the Eastbrook, Waltham areas might have something. Good luck and I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for!

Thanks, will check them out. The husband was staying a little clear of the coast - not sure why except we've had our share of storm scares - think he feels rising water is less of a concern too. Can't say I have any concern in that manner. Not sure if we can get the acreage we would like in the more coastal towns - it's worth a look though. Thank you

Molly,
I'm between Augusta and Belfast...in the lakes region, and you couldn't get me out of here with a shoe horn!

One of the wonderful things I'm learning about Maine is that no-matter what lifestyle/geography/topography you desire, you'll find it there somewhere. You don't have to give up the beautiful water views just because you live inland away from the threats of storms and tidal surges.
If you look at a satellite view of the state, it looks like the land is just floating around in the water - there is so much water throughout the state. Almost looks like the whole thing could just sink into oblivion at any moment! Anyway, lakes, rivers, streams and ponds are abundant. Just take your pick!!

We drove up rt 3 to Augusta earlier this summer, and I just love that area! It's beautiful....I don't get to do that drive very often, so it just seems like a special treat when it happens. It must be stunning when the leaves are turning! And what makes it so great Bewitched is that you appreciate it!!

El, I can't remember the exact number, but with lakes, ponds, rivers, and ocean it adds up to over 8,000 miles of waterfront!

I agree Molly...it is gorgeous here
We wanted to rent for a couple of years until we decide where to buy along the coast, but I really wanted to be by (if not directly on) water. We chose the Belfast lakes region, not only for it's beauty but also for it's proximity to just about everything in this state! No matter which direction we head out of the driveway, we are only a short, (truly New England-ish beautiful) drive away from the absolute best of Maine.
I have been thinking on how to give FLtoMaine my (however humble) opinion on a good area to research, plus I've been reading through allllllll the other opinions, advice and banter on where to live, best areas, most culture, employment, etc......and I realized that there is no one place. Maine is a state of being.
Wherever you *be*...is best
