If you look at a satellite view of the state, it looks like the land is just floating around in the water - there is so much water throughout the state. Almost looks like the whole thing could just sink into oblivion at any moment! Anyway, lakes, rivers, streams and ponds are abundant. Just take your pick!!

The number of lakes and ponds in Maine is a mind blower for sure.

Indeed they are! Actually I live on 3-Mile Pond (I have no idea why they call it a pond, it's rather large )...barely south of China Lake.

Wow, those pictures are gorgeous!! It is absolutely KILLING me that I have to wait until April to visit. Won't even compare to visiting in the fall-boo hoo . If someone could recommend two or three places north of Portland that I just must visit, that may help. I want to visit portland and some towns outside of that but I also want to go a little more North, too. Seeing as I probably will only have about 8 or 9 days-- I can't go too far north. I know what I'm asking is kind of vague but just shoot me your best ideas. I would love to just drive around the whole state but with little kids in the car (one who gets carsick) I think they'll have to put me away !

I have looked at a number of properties that fit this, as does the one we chose that is about 10mi west of Bangor.
They are out there. One of them we found in Uncle Henry's it was 15 acres with TWO streams and a partially constructed house for $60k, in Littleton (just north of Houlton). Unfortunately, this was the one where the guy went nuts with the chainsaw and whacked a whole lot of the trees . I didn't like it as much after that.
