Ah! See, I did know that! We saw that while we were up in March. Not quite as cool as the Chocolate Church.

Good luck at BIW..
If you like bad attitudes and a drug riddled work force you'll be fine.
I lived in Bath for all of my growing up life and still have family in town or immediately surrounding it. I couldn't get out of that town fast enough. My fondest memory was going to "the yard" as a kid at lunch time to collect all of the beer bottles from the workers. I made a killing!! I promised myself I would never follow in the family footsteps and work for them.
Bath is a tourist trap dump with a horrible school system and even worse infrastructure. The county sherrif can be found at the local Elks club on front street any given night of the week and the town's management is sub par at best. The area is very clique-ish as well, especially at BIW.
As for those of you moving to Maine without a job.. good luck! Unless you are willing to suck it up and work for a temp agency or relegate yourself to something less than you are capable of there isn't a whole lot of opportunity; unless you are into tourism or have some capital to buy a Bed and Breakfast. Searching for a job in your field of expertise?? Do your homework first, there isn't a lot of industry here. Maine is one of (if not the) worst states when it comes to industry. The economy is driven by tourism and nothing else. You will be taxed on everything and you will find that your money is being squandered by the law makers because they have no idea how to spend it effectively.
The quality of life is great in terms of low crime and a really pretty place to live, but the slogan "The way life should be" is false advertising.

Gotta admit, a real Mainer is going to tell you "how it is" He isnt going to sugar coat it for you. Kittery Naval Shipyard workforce has tons of drug problems too.
Not trying to rain on your parade, its just how it is.

I don't know about BIW, but one of my best friends lives in Bath with her husband and two children. They own a beautiful old home in a nice neighborhood, and the people I've met while visiting are wonderful! I also had a friend from college from Bath, and visited often during that time. I love it down there! I have not gotten the impression at all that it's economically depressed.
as far as employment Northeast Yankee, I'm not surprised you're struggling with your attitude about the state and communities. It would be hard for that not to reflect in any way. I've done a lot of interviewing in my time, and nothing makes me show someone the door faster than a bad attitude. I'll take someone who's a newbie in the field over attitude and experience combo any day.

Maine Not Cool
Maine doesn't scream wow let me get up and just move there by any means. Let's think for a minute the economy is extremely poor . One of my friends from NY moved there because he said it was real cheap to buy a house . Well my buddy Mr. smart guy found out the hard way that, Yeah the houses are cheap but 1 they are not going up in value and two he makes a third of what he did in NY . Let me continue can anyone say way to cold with a lack of a decent beach .I am sure some of you are like what is he talking it about well to all you please visit the east of Long Island and realize that the Hampton's OMG the Ocean , and the nicest Bay and Sound on the North Fork anywhere in the world there is a reason celebrities live there the beaches are soft white sand not well you know . Not to mention the education system is sub par in Maine you need some morey money its that simple . I have news if you pay a lot of taxes there is a reason and a good amount goes to schools . I am wasting way too much time for Maine so good luck and god bless if you plan on truly exceeding find a new location .
