We've wanted to learn for a long time and plan to when we get moved. It would be great to have some company!

So many new things to do, so little time.......

Wouldn't it be better to do that in the Gulf of Mexico? Water's a bit chilly in Maine.

I think that's what insulated wet suits are for. And I don't get in the water in the gulf. It's nasty.

Actually Maine is a great place to dive. Sure the water is a bit colder than someplace further South, but it tends to be a bit clearer also. I used to dive years ago, but haven't did it in 18 years or so.

Technically, the layer water between you and the wet suit is the insulation. You are referring to a dry suit.

I dive. Certified since 1990.

Do you know of any good instructors in the Belfast area? Where do you dive? Thanks!

There was an article in Downeast Magazine a couple of years ago about scuba diving in Maine, in the waters off Eastport. There is a post or thread somewhere in this forum about it too, so El maybe try a search. One of the reasons diving in Maine is so spectacular is BECAUSE of the cold water, and existing sea and plant life that exist in that environment. We have some friends who dive off Eastport--well, one dives, and the other says she just watches to make sure the bubbles are coming to the surface!

I have a friend in Sebec who runs his own diving school. Open water and ice diving as well as any recreational diving you want to do. He is always up to Moosehead diving around the sunken steamships.

Last time I went for scuba was around 1972, off OOB. Most recent was a little skin-diving/snorkel between Key West and the Dry Tortugas about 8 years ago. That was a first for my wife.

It was funny, at one point we came up together and she tells me "Ooh, I just saw a bunch of huge mackerel!" I said "Oh, really? That's nice."

A little while later we got together again and we were hearing some frantic screaming coming from the vicinity of another boat anchored a couple of hundred yards away. She says to me "Unh, those weren't mackerel, were they." I said "Ummmm, no, they weren't."

"So, when did you plan on telling me?"

"When we got back in the boat."

"Why? 'Cause you didn't want me screaming and splashing around like that?"

"Exactly."

"Good choice."
