I am a 54 yr old recently widowed homemaker wanting to relocate from Chicago area to Portland area with my 18 and 22 yr old daughters. One daughter will graduate from college in May, the other will be just starting college and wishes to stay with us for awhile and commute. Living in a very safe , well educated area on or near the ocean would be wonderful.I want to make sure my girls will have a social life that is safe and active.I am conservative and just want to live out my remaining years in a safe, beautiful and friendly area. However, I want the girls to not blame me for moving somewhere without young people or opportunity to succeed in their careers.I do not plan on working and can purchase a home around 400k.I have a son who lives out east as well. Any ideas of where or how we would fit in.Good areas to live...with a view.

Of course you would fit in. Portland and surrounding areas are as cosmopolitan as Maine gets, but minutes from outdoor opportunities. Sorry for your loss, but "living out your remaining years" is no way to look at how you you will spend your next 40 years or so. Maine is the place to continue your life. There are many ways to be active other than an ordinary job.

You mention you are "conservative". I don't think many would consider Portland "conservative" - maybe compared to NY or LA but by Maine standards it's the liberal hotbed.

Want to make sure there are jobs and social life for the girls. Is the downtown area safe?

There are actually legions of armed bandits driving tanks though the Old Port on a daily basis.
