I am currently visiting Maine on business, but have the weekend to explore. I plan to visit Gulf Hagas, but wanted to see if the fine folks on here could give me some info...
I am going primarily to take photographs. Most of the descriptions of the hiking around there speaks of being on the rim of the gorge. I want to be down in it (I don't really want to take photos of the waterfalls and the river from up above). Is that possible?
Are river levels high in Maine right now?
Is that area worth the trip? Any other places inland I should go? I am visiting Acadia on Sunday. Thanks for any info!
Perhaps I'm the only one awake, so I'll take a stab at your query.
In the two decades I've lived in Maine, I've not seen Gulf Hagas. But I did find some discussion among hikers on its merits here. I live on the coast, and sadly, haven't seen much of the incredible inland areas of Maine, so can't recommend anything!
Rivers/ streams/ ponds are as you might expect them to be in the Spring. Levels seem up around here, but not crazy high or fast. Being a Geographer, maybe this info will be meaningful to you.
Getting down into the gorge itself is VERY tricky and not recommended for anyone hiking alone or for inexperienced hikers. This time of year, especially with the rain we've had and the mists from the river itself, the rocks will be slippery and unstable. I don't recommend it. Even from the rim above, though, it's impressive and photogenic. The black flies down there will eat you alive anyway. They're bad enough up on the rim this time of year.
Coaster...you are right, it is very difficult to get down into the gorge. We didn't attempt it. Regardless, it was a very nice place - might be perfect in about 2 to 3 weeks, leaf-wise and there were plenty of opportunities for good photos. I'll post them later tonight. No problem with flies! Thanks for all the information everyone.
In summer there will be people under those falls and the flow will be less than it is now.
