Default Brunswick – My “hidden gem” has been uncovered

For a while now, I’ve been eyeing Brunswick as a possible retirement locale. For all I knew, Brunswick seemed to be pleasant enough. Its major attraction for me is the presence of Bowdoin (with its cultural and sporting events) and its proximity to the coast. In addition, I thought Brunswick was one of those “under the radar” kind of places that hasn’t been discovered by the wealthy who drive up the price of real estate wherever they go. But now Smithsonian magazine has gone and named Brunswick as one of the "20 best small towns in America." Thanks a lot Smithsonian. Now the moneyed hoards will be descending on Brunswick and turning it into another Kennebunkport I might as well stay put in Virginia

Naw. Truth be told, Brunswick has been a well known retirement town for quite a while now. Bowdoin College is a big attractor, both for retiring alumni with golden memories of college life and people who like the atmosphere of a college town. It also has a very good hospital, shorefront, close to Portland without being IN Portland. It's been featured in various magazines several times over the years.

Don't worry -- the monied class will still favor K-port.

Over 3,000 Navy personnel left and went to Jacksonville, FL. That crated a large amount of vacant real estate and some of those sellers were motivated. Some buyers benefitted from real bargains. There may still be a few left.
