It seems the traditional barber shop is a dying breed these days. Anyone know the location of some good ones in the mid-coast area?

I always liked it when they'd put the hot lather on the back of the neck and use a straight razor to tidy everything up.

There was a barber in downtown Waterville (by the hteater, I think). Not sure if he's there anymore. I used to get my haircut there when I visited family nearby. He did a great job but not sure about the hot lather. Another one was in Houlton just off the Square somewhere. He did a good job too. ANother in Machias. But thye're not near the mid-coast by a long shot. Wish we had one here.

Ben's Barber Shop on Front Street in Bath. I suspect Ben started cutting hair back when Churchill was still Prime Minister. Old style through and through. He's only there Thursday - Saturday now, and brings in other barbers for the rest of the week.

Well, since there are no more "Barber Colleges" left (at least in Maine), it's hard, but still not impossible, to find a real barbershop. Now, I'm assuming that your definition of a barbershop includes the existence of a real barber???

I go to the Men's Room on Hammond Street in Bangor. That will be quite a drive for you, but he accepts appointments, which eliminates my pet peeve with barbershops, and that's waiting. Even a worse pet peeve is trying to figure out the rotation you need to get the barber you want in a multi-chair shop (another reason I like the appointment thing).

When I was in the service, some guys would take a number and put it on the counter space of the barber they wanted. Then sit back and wait until he called their number. I guess it beat hoping for the right rotation. Most of us just took whoever called our number.

In Gorham there is a barber shop owned by a man named "Buster".....he's been cutting hair for years and does a good job. This is not a salon....it is a no frills, barber shop. He has other barbers who come in on busy days or when Buster is away....they are all good barbers. No toilet water, no shampoo, no massage, not even any talc....just a good hair-cut done in a clean decent enviornment. Buster can regail you with local history, his observations on small town life....his large farm...and his beloved dog...and his prize bull and cattle herd. He works pretty fast so there isnt much waiting....but I dont mind waiting....its a friendly place.....and the thick Maine drawl is music to my ear.

There are a couple here in Camden. One of them is Eric's Barber Shop. Not sure what the other one is called.

I used to go to this one place (gone now), small, one chair...and a fridge stocked with free beer for waiting customers.

I go to John's Barber Shop on Maine Street in Lincoln. It overlooks the lake and it is just like the shop I went to during WWII. It has recently been transferred to the latest generation to own and operate the shop.
