Burt's Bees Creator Roxanne Quimby Fights for America's Newest National Park | Natural Intelligence | OutsideOnline.com

Besides all the other issues, I think she overestimates how many people would go to this park; it is quite a trip to get up there. BSP certainly attracts a decent number of people, but even with Katahdin there, it is not so widely known outside of Maine. Katahdin is obviously the primary attraction up that way, I am not sure what else the causual park goer (i.e. the 99% who go to the Grand Canyon, but don't dare venture down any trails) would be heading to Northern Maine for. BSP is pretty much my favorite place on the planet, but I don't really see most people heading to the northern forest in large numbers.

Basically I think she is using the park jobs argument as a smokescreen to achieve her longstanding goals.

The Grand Canyon is 'on-the-way'. It is well located and we have two major East-West interstates that go by it. If you drive coast-to-coast and decide to take I-70 [say to go from NYC to L.A], or I-40 [from NC to L.A.]; it is a very convenient attraction to drive-by, and it does not cost a penny to stop in the parking lot and look at the vista point. I have driven coast-to-coast a few times, lots of people do so at some point in their lives.

BSP and Katahdin are conveniently located for who?

If you live on the East Coast and wanted to swing by BSP on your way to a destination in New Brunswick it would make sense. But I do not think very few people drive that route.

Maybe we could call the new East-West Highway the Quimby Highway rather than the Nimby Highway?

As far as a national park, I'll bet it would draw hundreds of people a year.
