The moral to this story is that if you're not from Maine and the people where you grew up and currently live aren't friendly to you - try moving to Maine - maybe someday Mainers will like you.

If you want to be close to nature, all of Maine is great - but Downeast is incredible. It's largely untouched, and the few hidden gems of fishing villages are like stepping back in time. If you can live without the luxuries of fast food, shopping malls and clogged traffic, try it out. It is precious!

Agreed! Welcome to the Maine forums! I fell in love with Eastport myself and truly is liking walking back into time.

Maine is good because you can find a place- people who need a more urban setting can be in Portland (and close to Boston when Portland isn't urban enough), people who want to live in farming communities can find them, want to live in the woods can find that, too. And there's people like me, who find that living on a small island is the only way to live (for me- I know lots of people could never handle it). I guess the best place to live in Maine depends on what kind of community you want, and usually you can find it somewhere in Maine!

I moved to Maine a couple years ago. I lasted 6 months. Due to the very reasons mentioned above. If you are a local, then fine. If not. they dont give you the time of day. I am glad I moved.
It is a beautiful state, and loved the serenity, but couldnt get a decent job or make any friends..

I certainly don't think this is the norm. I have no idea where you and the previous poster lived in Maine. As previously stated numerous times within this forum, most Mainers are welcoming and friendly as long as you don't come in and try to change the place to make it just like the place you just left. There are many posters within this forum that have moved to Maine from away and have felt very much a part of the community. Sorry your experience was not a good one. I guess it's safe to say that Maine isn't for everyone.

Maine isnt for everyone? LOL I moved here from San Diego County, an area that has what is considered idyllic weather....some part of everyday is sunny and shorts and t-shirt weather....no one could understand why I wanted to leave "paradise" and move to the north east. I guess "paradise isn't for everyone" either
I have found my place and I am lovin' it! I hope everyone else finds a place "just right" too, where ever it may be.

When I would describe IAH to friends, they'd all say that they wanted to come up and see it. I'd tell them they could come but they'd have to sit in the backseat of the car blindfolded for the whole 3 hour drive and the 40 minute boat ride so they could never - ever find their way back up again.
I once told one of my sisters out of state friends that was there visiting that had said that he wanted to move there that he couldn't until someone died. I told him the state had a cap on it's population and there was a waiting list he had to get on. I told him he had to contact the Secretary of State to get on the list. He believed me and talked all weekend about how was going to do that just as soon as he got home.
