There are spots where you seem to be in northern Mass. But the majority of places off Rt 1 down south are nice and friendly. My sister & BIL live in China. Close to W/ville but still filled with nice folks. Although a lot of "come from aways" are raising the taxes by paying through the nose for real estate and mystique. But they seem friendly too just like a local. Been in some nice toqwns around Rumford too. But I like Eastport best.

I have actually told the store owners that they either let my kid use the bathroom, or I have no problem with my kid peeing their pants IN THEIR store!!
It works everytime!
I definitely liked all the places I visited in the Skowhegan area. The Belmont Inn guy said we could have brought our dog, they welcome them!!
We ate at a nice little place in Bangor called Eagles Nest, they were nice there also.
It's hard to say anything about Medford, since we didn't see many places to stop at.

I grew up 30 minutes west of Boston, in Westboro. It sure has changed a lot up there. I'm surprised I guess since most gas stations with a convenience market have public restrooms. I'd be torqued if I had to go and some unfriendly grump told me no! >:

Seems to me it's somewhere in Hankock County??? Yup, just checked and it's around Franklin, Donnell Pond. Now to find ouot what the initials mean. Any answer Bob? I know their minor subdivisions like TWP and T28. Time to get out the Gazatteer.

Sometimes they have a R in there also. Range
T9SD is just a quiet, area, with no town office, but is close to a shopping area. Sort of like Argyle.

I tend to strongly disagree with these sentiments. Clearly, the further North of Bangor you go, the more rural it gets, but to say anything South of Bangor is like Boston is completely untrue.
I spent a good portion of my life in the Boston area, and can easily say that even the most urban parts of Southern Maine (of which there are very few) are not even close to being as busy or built up as Boston or even its extreme suburbs. Even Portland is a MUCH smaller town with a MUCH slower pace of life than the Boston area. It's also much cheaper and much more sparsely populated than even the furthest reaches of metro-Boston. Southern Maine is about as similar to Boston and its surroundings as it is similar to even the most hard to reach places of rural, Northern Maine (read: VERY different).
