I have lived in Maine almost thirteen years and I think it is the least racist state in the country. Welcome!

Anyone else have some suggestions?

I moved to the Bangor area from the coast several years ago. We had no idea what parts of Bangor were okay to live in etc... We moved from house to apartment each time our lease was up and eventually moved to Brewer.

We LOVED it. We were still just a cab ride from downtown Bangor (about 1.5 miles) if we wanted to go out. But it was much quieter than Bangor. The neighborhoods were fantastic for walking. You seemed further from downtown than you actually were. But still just a short ride in the car to the Mall or store.

Honestly, if you start going too far away from Bangor, you will find the driving to be difficult in the winter months. Plus, you'll literally start running into Deer with your vehicle.

In Brewer, we still had groundhogs, a fox and Deer feeding on the apples in our back-yard. But, you're not as likely to hit them with the car going 40+ miles an hour either.

Yes, driving can get a little tricky in Winter, especially if you don't have a 4WD.

But, running into deer? I think that mostly happens on the Interstate. Those of us who live 'away' from the city, where there are quite a few deer around, use a little common sense and drive cautiously, especially at dawn and dusk when they are moving to/from feeding and bedding grounds.

What's worse, is those little bahstid chipmunks that wait until you are only 20 feet away, then run out in front of you and deek back and forth trying to get you to crash into a tree or a ditch in your attempts to avoid hitting them.

I am moving up to Southwest Harbor in July. I was wondering if anyone could give me some insight into the town and maybe a good start on looking for a place to rent. The real estate companies are not much help and neither are any of the websights. Any information would be helpful and greatly appreciated.

Check your private direct messages.

Actually, there are several good real estate agencies who can help. The real problem is that there are very very few full time rental properties available on-island. When I needed a new renter last September, I advertised in the Ellsworth American. MY agency(which city data rules prevent me from naming) received more than 100 calls about it. They begged me to "make it stop", but still the calls kept coming in. And ...my property is pretty expensive to rent since is across from national park land, and has 5 bedrooms and a two car garage on 1.5 acres. There are almost no full time(meanin not just for 9 months until the summer tourists come in) houses available to rent on MDI. My wife was insisted in a large house for retirement so people would come and visit us, although we can close off literally half of it in the winter when no one comes, to cut heating costs by half.

But I will be happy to answer any question you might have about Southwest Harbor, or MDI. I just can't give any commercial business info about the island since doing that is against city data rules. I can do it privately in direct messages, though. And, I have lots of recommendations.

Are you retiring to Southwest Harbor? If not, how are you suporting yourself? Job at JAX?

My husband and I live in Michigan - we will be visiting Maine next week May 26-29th. My hubby has a job interview in Portland. I am a teacher. Can anyone tell me a little about Maine? Education in Maine? I am excited, nervous, and etc. for the possible move. We would be looking to live 30-45 minutes outside of Portland (more country and affordable housing). Thoughts? I appreciate all your help and have enjoyed reading the thoughts and experiences listed on this site.
