OK....
A Texan goes to Harvard, being unfamiliar with the campus he is having trouble finding his way around. So, he approaches a fellow and asks 'Hey, buddy, whar's the library at?'
The fellow tilts his head back, looks down his nose and replies 'At Hahvahd, we don't end a sentence with a preposition.'
The Texan looks at him for a minute and then responds 'Oh, alrighty then, whar's the library at, (insert rude appellation here).'

I would be shocked if anyone made remarks to you about your color. My husband looks very mideastern in the summer and no one says anything to him. Searsport is divided into natives and transplants, that is where all our tension comes from.
The natives have and old fashioned live and let live attitude, and the "people from away" are quite liberal. I should mention also we have a strong lesbian/ gay popualtion. They are also accepted here and treated the same as everyone else. Hope this helps.

pats , well stated,,
i've often heard there's much or had been much racism in the south,,now thinking , the races have been mixed for hundreds of years (living together) i've always thought that kind of odd..
tho most mainers may not have been traditionally exposed to many different races, there is an intrinsic respect (amongst most) that "what's your business, is your business, and my business is my business"
i've often asked some black folk livin in maine (at a party or social gathering) if they have ,,experienced any bias, or prejudice,,,,and the most common answer,,is not very much at all, tho,,once in a while they will run into a small minded person,,asking where they are from,,,
most also make the remark,,that they have very much experienced raw prejudice in the south ,, 100 times more than they ever did in maine,,,and the reason they give,,is that many white folk in the south or around new york,,,keep thier distance,,,and may quickly assimilate them,,to another they knew in a negative way,, where as most mainers dont have a firsthand frame of reference,
and most state,,,that mainers will usually go out of thier way to be nice or friendly,,,because they dont see many black folks and they want to leave a good impression for them if they are visiting..
i do think most of society has softened ,,in this light,,,i dont hear the gay jokes like i did 20 yrs ago,,or the race jokes,,anymore, im sure thier are pockets of prejudice,,in many places and maine may have some,,but personally, i believe its less and less.

I remember Maine..
We live in the Phila area. It's been about ten years ago we visited Maine and I've never been able to shake the images from my mind. I long to go back. Our children were young and we knew very little about the state, but answered an ad for a rental property up in Jonesport. We stayed about a week and there wasn't much around us immediately but blueberry fields and gorgeous country! So we started traveling out a bit. First we went down to Bar Harbor and went whale watching, which is another wonderful memory. Another day we travled up to New Brunswick and Campabello Island. We ate at the Lupine Lodge and I never even knew the name of the place until finding it on the net recently. Another year and a half my husband retires and we are both wanting to move up there. We are looking for small town atmosphere, but not too far removed. We also need access to a VA medical center. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!
