I would have thought everyone on the East Coast would be up here by now to cool off.

Temps in the 70s - 80s, and down in the 50s at night, while most of the East Coast is up around 100 with widespread power outages

Yet I haven't noticed a huge increase in summer people from the lower East Coast here, and I am on the beach areas of York County. We still have a preponderance of Canadians.

Have you guys noticed more tourists or about the same as usual?

The weather is really phenomenal this week. Low humidity.....cool nights.....clear sunny days....."The Way Life Should Be." and "Open for Business". If this holds.....I would expect a banner year for tourists. We had rain earlier.....but this stretch is picture perfect...a great time to be in Maine.

And the lobster prices are down.

Definitely more this year, but from the upper half of the East Coast. New Jersey is very thick on the ground, as are Massachusetts and Connecticut. New York is well represented. Very few D.C. or Maryland or points south, except the usual Florida snow birds.

My theory is that people are vacationing on the cheap, driving to places within a day's travel rather than flying West and renting a car to see Yellowstone or the Black Hills.

I agree with Coaster. We have had a light year in tourism up this far. The 4th was really light with people. I think between a Wednesday 4th and people trying to save money they are doing more "stay-cations".

You have to have money to go on vacation. With the number of people going on the dole exceeding the number of jobs created, the economy is so bad that vacations are a thing of the past for many people.

Yep, the weather has been good in one way- the rains we had earlier and the warm now has been good for my hayfield. Cutting now, might get two crops out of it this year. Unfortunately, some freak winds that came with the last storm(s) trashed the rest of my young apple trees (the ones that the deer didn't kill). I'll have to start from square one again with the orchard.

The summer weather is really a thing that could be better explored in terms of tourism.

There could be bus excursions of retirees, all inclusive, doing resort weeks in the mountains, lakes or coast of Maine.
There could be college student adventure tours that pick up at the train station in Portland or Saco.
There could be art tours to Wyeth Country, Portland museums and galleries, Rockland, and Ogunquit.
There could be more cruise ships (why not small ones) running a circuit of Kennebunkport, Boothbay Harbor, Brooklin, etc.

None of these have to be overly expensive if you go as a group and don't fly.

I mean, who wouldn't want come up here right now?

My BIL was paid $2.25/lb for shedders yesterday. His bank doesn't base his boat payment or mortgage on the price of lobster. He's still buying diesel to go out to haul, paying his stern man, insurance and all the other expenses. No break from the electric and phone companies. It's an unfortunate situation.

It is an unfortunate situation.....I do understand that. The price must reach a point of diminishing returns very quickly. I didnt mean to minimize the impact on the lobstermen. I was thinking as a customer would think if they saw the price of rib eyes was under $3 a lb.....and they stocked up their freezer.
