Maine is on the short list of states to which I may move when I retire. Research on housing, cost of living, amenities, etc. is reasonably straight forward. However, trying to get a grasp on the political atmosphere of an area is not so easy. For example, I am currently in Austin, Texas which is always considered a liberal bastion of Texas. Well, liberal in Texas means you only like the death penalty some of the time and not for all crimes. The religious conservatives control the state and Austin also (trying to remove Thomas Jefferson from school history books because he introduced separation of church and state, evolution is banned, current history books are anti-Christian and pro-Islam). This came as quite a shock. But for now, I'm locked into working for three more years and then I'm heading back to cold and snow. So my question for all you Maine-iacs (or whatever you call yourselves) is: what is the general outlook of the populace on politics, religion, ethnicity, etc. And if it can be compartmentalized by region, that would be great. I'm currently thinking no further north than Augusta and not on the coast. Thanks.

You may be a better fit in and around Portland. The rest of Maine borders on libertarianism.

I found it quiet interesting that I am meeting a number of people with tea party ideals (which for me is refreshing) but I am way up and East of where you are looking, and I've only been here a month, so I haven't met thousands of people

This is such an interesting thread! I'm glad it was started, as I'm learning a lot from it!

After reading posts about Maine being the most "welfare" state, and how "rural cleansing" is allowing the environmentalists to decide how Maine's rural wildlands can be used/not used, I was afraid the whole dern state was liberal. RI is bad enough that way!

Now I am more heartened. If the tea partiers are growing and garnering support among Mainers in the northern areas, perhaps we won't feel out of place after all!

Nor, there are also plenty of the same type of thinkers in the southern part of the state as well.

The tea party has been a breath of fresh air. I dont necessarily understand the ultra conservatism identity that has been placed on them. From someone who considers myself liberatarian I dont see that strong religious overtone to their messages that I see with a lot of southern republicans..

But to answer your question. I consider Maine to be free thinking with old habits. That is... on a day to day basis I think you will find Mainers to be open minded and tolerant yet somewhat conservative on a individual basis and in how they lead their own lives.. down to earth, hard working, honest!.. and then yet I find them to be liberal democrat in the voting booth.. which i suspect to old habits from the days when there such things as conservative democrats.. well just my opinion..
