I have a great mechanic near Ellsworth. But the dealer sold me a used car and just put a sticker on it. The rear brakes went metal to metal 2500 miles later. Nothing you can do to them. MY MECHANIC WON'T DEAL WITH THEM and gets all his parts from Quirk in Bangor, even though he could get same day service if he dealt with them.

This dealer tried to sell me a set of snows and told me I was getting a bargain for them for $1200 for four, only $300 each installed. These tires retail at Tirebuyer for $91 each.

Ouch. It only costs half that for 16" 10 plys on my truck. I just had 4 aggressive Goodyear Wranglers put on the wife's Jeep (235/75R15) for $500, including mount/balance and new valve stems.

1200 for tires?? sounds like you are on his ....favorite customer list

I've even bought tires off ebay, but lately,
there's a place nearby that sells used tires for 25.00 a piece, then 15.00 each to balance and install,

I've bought new from dealers, vip, and other places.... just despise all the fee's to put on, and the new tire cost- I had a ford focus and many places, cheapest cost was well over 100.00 each

Re: used tires. Back when I was young and poor, I bought pretty good used tires from salvage yards for $2 each. (This was 1970, mind you. There were two auto salvage yards side by side on the road between Orono and Bangor.) Can people do that anymore?

In October my Dw came home driving on a donut. I called our mechanic in Old Town, who said to bring it in immediately they had one hour remaining before they were closing.

The old tire was inflated and we found that the sidewall was damaged. The mechanic had the proper size tire on-hand, which was then mounted, balanced and installed [this tire is not 'new', it was salvaged from the junkyard, though it had deep treads] for $20.

That is 'Daves Service Center' on route-2 between the bridges on French Island, in Old Town.

Coaster - check out Greenpoint Auto in Brewer. Or call them and see what they have for tires.

Silver's was one of the junkyards I used back in the day. Didn't know it was still in business.

Yep, got a rear spring for my truck there a while ago. Now I need another, for the other side. (I had a feeling I should have bought both at once.)

The shops have one posted. Of course the problem is depending on the shop the results and what is inspected vary. Those who pass vehicles that should not be passed get a smack on the wrist and a few months without being able to do them. As a OTR ( Over The Road ) truck driver for many years be glad you do not have to meet the requirement trucks do. I have had trucks put out of service ( what happens when you fail a DOT inspection these are the pull overs you see on the side of the road some with scales built in other the dot troopers carry portable scales ) for a lightly chafed air line!
