Northern Penobscot County has the biggest white tail deer in the whole world. It's the climate and the feed. If a fawn doesn't reach 70 to 80 pounds the first year they will not survive the winter. Therefore only the biggest deer get to reproduce. It's a self perpetuating natural condition. Fortunately we have the ideal natural food for deer so it all remains in balance.

I grew up near Yosemite in California, my parents still live there. My step-father has brought in numerous whitetail deer between 160 and 190 pounds.

According to Wiki:
Quote:
,,, The male (also known as a buck) usually weighs from 130 to 220 pounds (60 to 100 kg) but, in rare cases, animals in excess of 350 pounds (160 kg) have been recorded. The female (doe) usually weighs from 90 to 130 pounds (40 to 60 kg), but some can weigh as much as 165 to 175 pounds (75 or 80 kg).

Here is a whitetail deer that exceeded 200 pounds.
Iowa World Record Whitetail Deer

Quote:
... The most common misconception about the whitetail is its size. Almost everyone, including experienced hunters who should know better, usually holds his hand shoulder-high when indicating the size of this deer. He would do better to hold his hand a little above his belt, for the average whitetail stands between 36 and 40 inches high at the top of the shoulder. Especially big bucks may be 42 inches high. They have a total length of between 60 to 75 inches and an average weight of about 150 pounds. The Florida Key deer seldom weigh more than 80 pounds, while the largest whitetail deer on record is 511 pounds.

In Maine the weights we refer to are "woods dressed". That is the hanging weight after the innards have been removed in the woods. Thee are numerous bucks taken every fall in Maine that weigh over 200 pounds, woods dressed. If you send in for it the fish and game department will send you a patch for your jacket. Many hunters have several of them. I had a doe on the back lawn this evening that would dress out at about 130 pounds. Bucks over 300 pounds are not unusual here.

We have a herd of deer on our property. See them all the time. They love my birdfeeders in the winter, when I forget to bring them inside at night. We could easily reach out the window and touch the deer. Told hubby they probably watch tv through the windows.

Good buck in his prime. Nice heavy antlers. You need help to drag one of these on dry ground. I like to hunt from a canoe. I never had to drag a deer up hill to a canoe. Think about that. I paddle across a pond or lake or river and hunt the back side. I never see another man's track and the deer don't expect to see me. ;-)
