Not to sound like the Burlington Tourist Bureau, but I should have added there's a long established co-op, gardening cooperative and huge natural food market, as well as the University of Vermont and a couple (at least) other colleges. Need more? Lots of great live music, 7.5 bike and walking trails along side the lake, interesting restaurants, and a downtown designed by the same guy who did Boulder Colorado's Pearl Street. More? Great healthcare, lots of cows (cheese!), skiing and lush green rolling hills. Oh, and how about some small town covered bridges and church steeples too? OK then ...

Burlington is an excellent option.

For Maine, Blue Hill comes to mind as something that has not been mentioned. Quite small and intact...but with a burgeoning arts and co-op scene. 15 minutes from Ellsworth (which has a good downtown but also a bit of strip malls), 40ish minutes from BGR airport and Bangor. Belfast, which has already been mentioned, comes to mind as well. And obviously Bar Harbor.
