I was wondering if all terrains, being made for mud, etc, would do well on ice and snow. I find lots of folks using them out my way in CA, going skiing, etc, but I was wondering if anyone has experience with it out there with constant snow. Would I need a set of winter tires too, or just winter rated all terrains?

Its a well known fact that mud is everybit as slippery as snow and has exactly the same consistency and temperature as 25 degree snow. Have you read any of the reports or looked at any of the videos discussed here?
Wednesday I was driving home about 530pm, and the roads were the worst I have seen them in a long time with black ice. Was like we didnt have winter tires, and had bald all season tires instead.... Really happy none of it was on any corners.
I dont think I have ever experienced it like that. I was going a steady pace, about 30mph, accelerating very slowly and the wheels were getting minimal traction, like I was stopped on a hill and tried to go but I was already going good and barely touched the gas. This happened a few times. I ended up going out a few hours later and all the roads had been salted well, however still went past someone off the road and a state trooper helping them.
Last night coming home I stopped to check my mail box. Since my vehicle was headed the other way, I had to walk across the road to my mailbox. While driving I thought the pavement was clear. Walking on it proved the pavement had a layer of slick ice on it.
Horrible time to have winter tires on now. These temps cause them to wear way quicker than normal. At this time of year, I really enjoy have 2 vehicles, can take the winter tires off one of them....
Up until tonight we have had temps below freezing every night. It has only been above freezing during the days. So long as night temps stay below freezing, I would not remove winter tires.

I have general Arctic Altimaxes. I drove to PA with them 3 years ago over Christmas. Some where in Massawhatsis the temperature got to about 60, and in Pa it was almost 70. I drove more than 1000 miles in temps quite a bit above 45 degrees. that was 3 years ago. I still have plenty of tread on them, after 5 years. At this rate they will go another 5 years.
They don't wear that fast in warmer temps. Just don't be driving them in 85 degree temps.
