I got Maine crime data from www.crime-statistics. com, which is the 2008 FBI crime statistics. Maine is generally overall very safe. I was surprised to read that Calais is (the only ME town) rated as 'Dangerous' and the data shows a high crime rate across the board.

I've never been to Calais, so I don't know, but it doesn't look so bad in photos. Anyone in the forum live there or know it well? Is there something about it, maybe its being a boarder crossing, or entry point for smuggling, or some other not obvious factor such as including federal crimes in with local data, that would explain such a bad crime rating? Just curious. Thanks.

Yuh, Calais is the Detoit or Baltimore of Maine. Drivebys, shooting galleries, prostitution, you name it. Seriously though, when you have 3 crimes per year and in one year you have an influx of 6 crimes into the data it kind of skews the stats. Lies, damn lies and.... Nuf said.

Thanks for the reply. I thought there must be some idiosyncratic factor that skewed the data.

Isn't also that border towns receive higher stats due to, anything that is prosecuted via entry points, gets recorded as a local crime stat? If so, then I agree, Calais is very safe (as is all ME in general) but the data make places in Wash. Co. like this, look like hell stat-wise.

Calais is a threshhold for the prescription drug trade in Maine. The crime in very eastern Maine consists of drug issues, domestic violence, and the occasional burglary. Oh...and speeding tickets.

As an aside, Calais is a city, not a town.

There are drugs everywhere, but the Calais area has it bad.

I found Calais to be picturesque and very quiet compared to Chicago. I didn't fee unsafe there at all, but there was something about Eastport and that drive in the middle of nowhere to get there.
