They're in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, NY, western PA, etc. Western NY (where I'm from) has a good sized concentration - and they keep coming. Mennonites in general are all over the country. They move where the property is cheap and money can be made.

There are two big communities in the County now, with a Mennonite one right across in N.B. And they keep coming. Not bad people at all.
They bought half of the family farm; kind of neat to see them doing things exactly the way my great-grandfather must have, over a hundred years ago.

Thorndyke also has a community of AnaBaptists.

I think Kingman has a community. [a friend has invited me to attend their worship services]

On the Orono / Old Town line is an annual Rotary Club auction and each year I see a bunch of them showing up, so I must assume that there is another community in this region that I have yet to pin down.

I hope they're better people in Maine than in Indiana. We took a carriage ride to a farm and the horse was lame. We arrived to see barefoot children running around in animal feces. A poor unfortunate raccoon trapped in a hot cage with no food and water. A lot of starving diseased cats, and the so called Amish man talking on his cell phone in the middle of the tour. It was a very unpleasant experience.

There are also cases of domestic abuse not investigated and puppy mills operating in Amish communities (I've not heard of this in Maine, though)

As far as I know, the Amish don't use cell phones. I don't think they use regular phones either, or motors, or electricity. Mennonites, OTOH, *do* use those things.

Just like any other community, they have good and bad.

Where I'm from, I have a running joke about Fridays at Wal-Mart. It is "Amish night". Friday day and night they all flood Wal-Mart and buy anything and everything. They come in the back of trucks - they pay "regular" people to drive them there.

They also carry massive wads of cash, and generally don't smell very good (just so we can get all the observations out into the air).

I worked at a lumberyard when I was a teenager, they would come and buy 20 2x4's and carry them all out at once. 10 year olds carrying as much as full-grown men. Gotta respect that.

They've definitely contributed to the culture out where I'm from - but they generally keep to themselves. Renowned artisans though - between home-ade bakery, dairy, and furniture.

I don't think anybody around here has a bad word to say about them. Maybe they're just laying low and suckering us in, though......................hehe
