My lovely wife and returned recently from a great road trip. She had five weeks in a row off so we loaded up the truck with a little camping gear, a couple of coolers, a week's change of clothing, and some cold weather gear and headed west. We covered 17 states ending up as far west as Whitefish Montana. We left Maine on August 27th and got home September 25th which was four weeks and one day by the calendar. We covered 7316 miles and saw so many great things it was incredible! I was able to visit my long lost first cousin in Longmont, Colorado whom I had not laid eyes on in 43 years. She was great and we instantly rebonded like we were when we were kids!
Among the sites we saw were ,1000 miles of soybeans and corn!, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, The Badlands, Cathedral Spires, Needles Highway, Devil's Tower, Custer State Park SD, Sturgis, Deadwood, Jackson Hole, The Grand Tetons, Jenny Lake, Camped three nights in Yellowstone, and turned around at Glacier National Park Montana. We saw deer, elk, antelope, coyotes, prarie dogs, and tons of other things. Nice Trip!

Wow! You saw a lot of stuff. I remember passing a cornfield that was about 1000 miles long too.

It's the one great thing we have not done. We would still like to do a road trip. I'm glad you did yours. It may not be possible to do this safely in the near future.

Nmlm it's very safe out there believe me! We ran in to two towns we didn't like on the whole trip ..Davenport, Iowa and Riverton, Wyoming. In one month on the road that isn't too bad! Oh yeah I got bit by a bed bug in Rochester NY too but that was it!

The country is huge and very friendly. We met many dozens of people and none of them were the least bit nasty. Sure there were times in traffic (Cleveland comes to mind) when we were flipped off for not being aggressive locals but so what? We made it past that place and moved on to a better place. There are plenty of them. I probably woundn't drive that far again but one time was real fun!

Maineah, when I think about where & how I would like to go if I could, it's pretty much what you describe. I'm glad you & your wife had good travels, and especially that you found friendly people along the way. It is good to get away, but I'm guessing that you were glad to return home to Maine, too. Seeing this amazing country is awesome, returning to Maine - awesomer!
