Fees, maybe.

Taxes are very reasonable in most of ME. We pay crazy property taxes out here in WI and we get almost nothing for the money. They don't even plow the sidewalks here, you have to shovel them yourself! And dummy us, we bought a house on a corner lot...duh! I've never lived anywhere in Maine that didn't have sidewalk plows, yet when I mention it out here they look at me like I sprouted 2 heads.

Here in Maine a combination hunting/fishing license for an adult costs $36.

How much is it in Wi?

Actually a combo license for hunting/fishing is $38 this year, and don't forget the $2 agent fee for all licenses. All in all $40 for a combo license is rather cheap. The link will take you to the Maine IFW site with all kinds of information.

I have to say until I saw this show called TV show "Kids by the Dozen" highlighting a family from Orono I wanted to move to Maine too. Now - no thanks, I don't think I could take that kind of isolation. But I really loved watching the show and The Winters but not my cup of tea.

"I can do without the PD, I don't dial "911". My buddies Smith & Wesson or Sig Sauer are usually closer and can respond much faster, and if they can't handle the problem there's always the Big Mac Attack."

Don't forget their cousins Heckler & Koch.

Isolation in Orono, Me.? Orono is a college town there is no need for isolation unless you SEEK it. There's all sorts of things to do there.

Just some comparisons between Mass south shore and Maine;

.5 acre, 2 br ranch $450.000
2 acre, 3 br colonial w/2 bay garage $130,000

Taxes on above property
Mass $4000/year
Maine $1000/year

1 year transfer (dump) sticker $180
2 year sticker $1

50lbs potatoes -can't FIND in Mass- buy in 10lb bags for $6.99 each totals $34.95
Maine $6.99 for all 50 lbs.

Make of it what you will, but you can't put a price on the essence of Maine!

I may be from away, but I'm here to stay!

Ok, you got me on the potatoes! Holy Cow! So THAT's how Z eats on $1/day.

We're paying $2.88/5lb bag of small-med sized russetts. We can get 10lb for double that amount. Some places have 15lb bags that go on sale occasionally. That's the only time I buy them in bulk anymore, since there isn't a real savings.
