We all know this country has lost manufacturing to other countries like china, etc. As a whole, we have basically lost the ability to manufacture our own goods.

Now, it looks like we are heading toward the loss of our ability to feed ourselves. As regulations increase producing food will become too expensive in the usa. Most of the frozen fish and shrimp I see in the stores is now from Thailand, Cod from China or other places overseas. None of it is caught in the usa. I'm worried about the pollution in the seafood from these developing countries.

Not sure if environmental regulations on USA fisherman is the right answer if it creates an incentive to import more food.

To most people in the usa, maine is known for lobsters and to some, wood. We should be pushing those items more, not trying to squash it. We dont have much, but for the time being, we do have those two products.

Not to mention almost all of our apple products, juices and such come from China. We have such lovely apples, I can't understand it.

You are right, msina.

All those tasty heirloom apples are becoming harder and harder to find. We are inundated with mediocre apples from China.

I is hard to even find a good Cortland or Rome apple. Though I did notice in Maine last week that Hannaford does a great job of promoting local produce from area orchards and farms.

Default Does sinking line also cause destruction of bottom habitat?

I know that those proposing and advocating this sinking line are concerned for the Right whales but does the use of sinking line have some detrimental impact on the bottom habitat? I have untangled a few lines and pots for lobstermen up my way in Maine while scuba diving and it would seem that sinking line will cause more entanglements and potentially cause damage to the creatures that inhabit the sea bottom. All that scraping and such would likely result in both lost pots and a damaged substrate. A damaged substrate can't be good for the creatures living there.

What a mess.

Alan

Hannaford was the grocery store I "happened into" when I was there, and I was quite impressed with them, also... on that account and others.

I think I have found "my" store for after I move. Though if I can find the WalMart, I'll probably still go there once a month or so for the expensive stuff that I need to buy in bulk (critter food mostly)

Last time I went to a Hannaford, I went to the veggie isle to buy some potatoes and they had 4 different kinds, but none from Maine. I was bummed, but bought the idaho ones anyway. Not sure if it was out of season, out of stock or something else.

The super walmart I go to never has Maine potatoes, its a shame.

No, but maybe we could recruit some members of the Makah Indian tribe to help: FOXNews.com - Officials: Gray Whale Killed With Machine Gun Off Washington Coast - Science News | Current Articles (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,296185,00.html - broken link)
Those Indians wouldn't put up with any of this sink/float rope bs (is that Ok to say?).

I will say that while I don't have much against Hannaford, I shop at our local IGA 99% of the time....the meats are 10x better--more flavor, cheaper in price and better cuts....and it's not a "chain".....(Independent Grocer's Association)....they work hard to carry local products, including Maine potatoes!!
