I also heard them and yesterday I saw my first dragonfly. They usually appear at the same time. Dragonflies eat black flies. Both are attracted to carbon dioxide. The black flies use it to home in on their prey (us). The dragonflies know that black flies are attracted to CO2 and they follow it to find the black flies. It's interesting to watch dragonflies pick black flies out of the air around sunset. Black flies are poor aviators. They can't fly in wind and they can't fly when the humidity is low. Cool damp mornings and evenings are the best times for black flies.

Growing up in MA I used to love to hear the peepers as we lived about 2 miles out of town on an acre of land. Here in Maine I live now on a much smaller lot and near town so I never hear the peepers unless they are near a campground we are at. One of the advantages of leaving near town is we "never" get black flys. Years ago when we lived in the country, the black flys were horrible as we had thick woods in back.

Ok...I'm definitely in new territory. I thought this was going to be a post about someone peeking in your windows!

Are we talking about birds?

Edit: According to my detective work, we're talking about frogs?

That's interesting about black flies, didn't know that. We don't get them much here -- do you find them more inland? I am on the coast. Best of both worlds, rural and ocean. And the peepers! Singing about spring.

Black flies breed near and live in trout streams. Their larvae are food for trout. They emerge when the water temperature reaches 42 degrees. There is an old saying, "When the flies are bitin', the fish are bitin'." Bring your bug dope.
