Default Fishing

Can someone give me the scoop on Maine's saltwater fishing scene? Specifically nearshore and inshore fishing. What species are typically sought after?

There is a Party Boat out of Ogunquit called the Bunny Clark. Last time we went we cought over 50 lbs of pollock, Haddock, Cod and a few other fish. That was just in Fillets.

Maine Department of Marine Resources Recreational Fishing Angler Guide, Do You Know Your Catch

many towns along the coast offer boats that will take you out, but you can of course go out on your own as well

oh, that's the "36 most common"

Cod, haddock and pollock are closer to shore in winter. If you get a good calm day and it's sunny you can get some very good cod fishing close in. The ocean is dangerous in winter. You can get sudden fogs and the wind can pick up. Not many people are out in winter and few people are likely to see you if you get in trouble. The best way to fish in the winter is to go with two boats.

The fish keep well though. ;-)

I am planning a move to Maine; my grown son from SC said he was really excited and hoped I would be there by spring as he wants to go salmon fishing. The only thing I remember about fishing in Maine and NH and RI with my Dad (many years ago) was fishing for bass, pickerel, pike, yellow perch, and the highly prized trout. I remember land locked something or other in the big lakes. Is there salmon fishing in Maine? If so....Fresh or salt water?

The best landlocked salmon fishing is just after ice-out. Sebago has salmon and the ice goes out there first. You can follow the ice-out north from lake to lake for about six weeks until if finally goes out in the Fish River Chain up near Madawaska.

Lake hopping for spring salmon is a great idea.

Most small cold water ponds contain brook trout with some monsters lurking.

Stream fishing is legendary in Maine. The West Branch of the Penobscot can be phenomenal up in the north woods.

The Kennebeck, from it's source at Moosehead all the way to the ocean is awesome fishing. It harbors more species of fish than any other river in the U.S.

There are so many out of the way places, you almost can't fish them all. I can even take you out to areas harboring a very rare trout, called a blueback.
