An idiot like me that is tired of watching a substantial number of trees denuded while these things feast on my back 40. There seems to have been a solid upswing in population numbers over the past few years in central Maine. One of my best apple trees was destroyed and I find pine/hemlock/oak and rock maple branches neat sliced off all over the ground on my back land. I suppose I could trap them and move them to someone else's land, but I've found a .22 saves the trouble.

If you can find them, get some Aguila SSS rounds for your .22. They are almost silent and pack a wallop out to 50 yards. They are well suited for use where a louder round might attract unwanted attention. They make about as much noise as one clap of the hands. SSS stands for subsonic sniper. Much of the crack of a regular .22 Long Rifle is from breaking the sound barrier.

They'll do a number on a garden too. They'll "sample" everything, ruining many vegetables, not just eating one or two melons but, taking chunks out of them all.
