After you get off I-84 onto I-90E that's the Mass Pike. There is a short cut. Take the Auburn exit onto 290E. That takes you to 495 and saves 20 to 30 miles. You'll see it on the map.

I-81 through PA to I-84 East - 84 to 90E about 10 - 12 miles and get on 290E for about 25 - 30 miles. Pick up 495 to 95-N to Maine.

This way will save you time and distance. We've been taking this route for 12 years to Maine and back. It's a fairly straight shot to Maine.

I agree Molly ! I'm really thankful about that. Thank you also to those who posted since I last did.

Alison, I didn't know that about AAA I better re-check the N Texas to Va part - it went diagonal across Arkansas and the width of TN over to western VA. I haven'et had a chance to check details of that part on the map.

The VA-ME part looks way better - thanks again.

You might try Yahoo! Maps, Driving Directions, and Traffic and MapQuest: Maps, Directions, Gas Prices & Business Directory to see if those two services provide different routes. I have driven from Virginia to New York and from New York to Maine and the routes provided by AAA seem to be correct.

Best of luck ... and safe trip.

Charley

DFW North to Maine I always go 40 From Dallas through AK and down the length of Tn to 81 right outside of Knoxville, then the rest is the same.

From Amarillo I do 40 to 44 then 270 around St. Louis (270 toward St. Charles, the other way is a pain) then 70 to Columbus OH, 77N to 80 right outside Cleveland then 80 to 81 just south of Scranton/Wilkes Barre. From there it is the same.

What can I say, I like to drive . Never even carry maps anymore, anywhere.

when i was in NH I used to drive to SC once a year to visit family. I am not a particularly good driver and am intimidated by lots of trucks. I learned early on not to go down thru NYC and Baltimore and Washington DC; i took the scenic route--sometimes thru Hartford (other times thru Vermont) and then over to Newburg NY and down thru NJ and then since I had more time than brains I made a sweet trip down the blue ridge parkway and somewhere came out and started veering over thru Charlotte and on to SC. It was a long and at least one or two nights but my dog and I loved it! Good Luck and happy trails to you. I am not recommending my route, just recollecting some nice times on the road. PS. When they advertise Diner Ahead in NYstate, it is just a convience stop with some fast food joint, did find some nice diners in the pocono's but not the ones advertised on the road signs. lol

40 from Dallas? 40 runs up By Oklahoma City. Wouldn't it be easier to run 30 thru Texarkana and catch 40 near Little Rock? (That's how I go.)
