As a reference, Maine is as big as the other five New England states combined and we have under 1.3 million population. Don't worry about sprawl. What we need is a little good healthy sprawl to replace the population we have lost. If my town continues to grow at its present rate, by the year 2050 we'll be back up to the population we had in 1890.

What do we think of 'Texicans'?

Well I think that they come from Texas.

Careful of the label "Texican".....it means something different here.

Yes, I know, but living in Maine I get to use that phrase so seldom.

It doesn't offend me, but just so you know.....I'm not one! Although you have seen my picture, so you know that already. I'm actually of Irish descent on my mom's side and Cherokee on my dad's.

If you were born and raised in the northeast, then you are a Yankee, not a Texan. I wouldn't worry about what other people think, life is too short.

It seems like a lot of people in Maine are not very fond of Texans. I say this because of the comments I hear when I visit, and things I see posted in various internet forums. I imagine this probably has a lot to do with people's disdain for one particular resident of Crawford...but I also think it's largely due to stereotypes that existed long before Bush became president.

The plan is to move there, and then find a job while I stay with family. My concern is that when I start sending out resumes, hiring managers are not going to want to interview "the guy from Texas".

We all know that a number Mainers don't like people "from away". My fear is that this is especially true of people from Texas.

So what do you all think....am I being paranoid, or realistic? Give me the straight dope here... no sugar coated, politically correct answers!

Default From the south

I'm from the south, and Maine reminds me more of Mississippi than any other place I've been in the US, and i've lived all over. The differences are: there is no real diversity here, and like you'll read on this forum, the people don't acknowlege or aren't aware of how much disdain you can occasionally come across because you are from "away". It can go smooth for periods, but you will definately be faced with that, don't listen to all the sugar coating about "the way life is supposed to be". The way life is supposed to be is having universal love, not tribal consciousness.
Having said that, the people are a minus here, but the scenery is a plus.
You'll find the most educated people here are from "away" and that probably the reason they aren't liked is because of that. Let's keep out that knowledge! LOL
