I want to stop at Downtown Portland, Popham Beach State Park, and Boothsbay on the way to Acadia. I want to those in one day.

That would take forever, normally I take I-95 to I-295 and get off at Brunswick and pick up US1 from there, it takes me about 5 hours to get to Ellsworth.

US1 is bumper to bumper from Kittery to Portland, especially during tourist season, you will be stuck at every crosswalk in a line of cars.

Can't do it in one day unless it's a very loooong day, unless you plan to just wave as you drive by.

Leave Portsmouth at 8 a.m., take I-95 to I-295 to Portland, you're there by 9 a.m., wander around the Old Port, get coffee and maybe breakfast, you might get out by 11 a.m. if you don't dawdle.

Get back on I-295 to Route 1 in Brunswick, take that to Bath, Route 209 to Popham, that's 90 minutes, so you're there by about 12:30. Walk the beach, soak up some rays, grab a quick lunch at Spinney's, and you're heading back up 209 again by perhaps 2 p.m. And that's being generous. More likely 2:30 or 3, but let's be optimistic.

Boothbay Harbor is another 90 minutes, so you get there about 3:30 p.m. Again, walk the downtown, admire the harbor, take a few photos, browse a few shops, you might get out by 5 p.m.

Boothbay Harbor to Bar Harbor on Route 1, and you might roll into Bar Harbor by 9 p.m.

All of those estimates assume OK traffic and no lingering. If you get trapped behind a pulp truck on the way to Bucksport or caught in a traffic jam in Camden, add time accordingly. If you seriously want to drive Route 1 all the way from Portsmouth, be thinking midnight or later to get to Bar Harbor.

ETA: If you just want to get from Portsmouth to Bar Harbor as quickly as possible, take I-95 to I-295 to I-95 again to Bangor and I-395 to Route 1A to Elsworth and then to Bar Harbor.

It will take you the better part of a day going that route and stopping in those places. I disagree that the traffic will be bumper to bumper this time of the year. Perhaps a bit slower that in the summer.

How long do you want to stop in each of those places and what month of the year do you want to stop in those places?

According to Google Maps, you'll be looking at five and a half hours of driving if you go their prescribed route. If you really want to stay on Route 1 as much as possible, figure on another hour of driving.

Okay this is my proposed trip route:

Day One- Leave Portsmouth early in the morning and drive to Downtown Portland via Route 1. Stay there for two or three hours and then drive to Popham Beach. Stay in Bath, ME overnight.

Day Two- Leave Bath early in the morning and drive to Boothbay and stay there for one or two hours. Then drive to Acadia National Park in the evening via Route 1 and sleep there.

Day Three- Full day in Acadia

Day Four- Leave Acadia in the morning for White Mountains New Hamphire.
