Sports Kids Play in Maine?
Hi all,
A question I had as we get ready to move to S Maine is what kinds of sports kids play in Maine. My boys schools don't cover sports as much as they do physical exercise and they have played baseball and soccer on community teams. My eldest is wondering if they play a lot of LaCrosse in Maine or if there are any other sports that are particulary popular so he'll be prepared once we make the move.
Thanks!

Football, hockey, baseball, basketball, soccer, track & field are the sports found at pretty much every high school. Then some schools have boys gymnastics & wrestling.
Not sure if any high schools have lacrosse teams or not, perhaps the larger schools in the Portland area.

Once you get further north there isn't any football either. A couple of schools here have hockey, but not most. Just check with the school systems close to where you are looking to move to.

Calais and Woodland (Baileyville) combined this year to create a football team. They've been playing in New Brunswick for 3 years, but the Maine Principal's Assoc. brought them in as a JV team for 2 years. We're hoping that after the results of this season are considered (undefeated, most games by 30 points or so) we'll be able to move into the Varsity level. It really does depend on where you are....in southern Maine more sports are available...lacrosse is one of them, and kids play field hockey as well. Cheerleading is pretty big in a lot of places. In my part of the state HS basketball is big--not just for basketball as a sport but also because it's a social gathering too.

Not really a sport, but year round exercise and a lifetime of competition and training is nice too. There are many Karate and Jiu Jitsu type activities all over Maine.

The smaller schools (Class D, some class C) usually do not have football- the insurance premiums are to high to justify offering it. Most smaller schools also do not offer hockey. But usually in those smaller school, basketball is the top sport, followed by baseball/softball, and soccer.

Oops sorry. I was always down near the "volve line", therefore with bigger schools. I thought everyone had football!
I know basketball is HUGE up north. Guess we'll have to familiarize ourselves with that if we end up further north.

thanks
Thanks for the insight. My eldest son was afraid everyone was going to play LaCrosse and he wouldn't know how! I hadn't thought about how many people you need to play football. Basketball is huge in North Carolina too.
Thanks again

my son plays lacrosse, for his high school team, i remember watching the first game a couple years ago,,,and thinking this sport is just as rough as football!! the kids seem to enjoy playing, and its great exercise for them!
most high schools have a decent sports program,,,especially in the more populated areas of the state,
he also played basketball, and coincidently, his fav college basketball team is n.c. ,,has n.c caps and shirts
i went to a class d high school,,and back then they did have football,,a big thing back then,,,but soccer took over a few years after i graduated,,football is still popular in the class-a (more populated) schools
