to be feeling better or well, " she seemed quite smart this morning when I went over to check on her.

a hot day was frequently described as "sultry"

to make a poor attempt at something was "to make a mockery of it"

a "mackerel sky" was a striated cloud pattern.

"Red sky at night sailors delight
Red sky at morning sailors take warning."

And probably because of the shortage of cooking ingredients, many of Grammy's recipes were "mock" as in "Mock Oysters" and lots of other Mock ____ that I can't recall. And in a similar vein creamed salt cod was "Cape Cod Turkey" in my childhood.

We had "Finnin Haddy" Creamed salt cod over boiled taters, with chopped hard boiled eggs sprinkled on top, and Mock apple pie made from ritz crackers.

While not really a Maine Saying but, more folklore, I remember it was said that a child born with a "veil" was blessed. Anyone have any more information on this story?

I think babies born with this membrane were either considered blessed or to have the gift of "second sight" or to be visionary.

I have been told that in the days of home deliveries, the placenta was buried in the back yard and an apple tree was planted over it. You could tell the number of children born in the house by the number of apple trees in the back yard.

A "yip" is a bend in a board. If you assemble something with a yip in it the final product will be "yip yawed" or crooked.
