My Hubby has a million old Maine sayings, of course most of them would have alot of blank spaces if I tried to post them here.

Funny I thought this was a southern thing. I knew some Caribbean people that did it.

And no, there isn't much until you get to Harrington.

I always thought Columbia Falls was the first hint of civilization on that road north!

Don't know if it's a Maine saying too or not, but on the Cape the locals on a hot summers day will still say, 'It's hotter'n a boars a** at fly time!'

Fabulous thread!! My dad says "slicker'n a smelt", usually when demonstrating something that works well. I guess 'slick' usually has a negative connotation, but this expression wasn't used negatively, at least not by us. I can picture my dad teaching me how to split wood, saying "see that, slicker'n a smelt!" Which was his way of saying, basically, "like a hot knife through buttah". It got used for other things, but generally with the same idea.
I say it sometimes, then I have to explain what a smelt is, LOL. But of course, then I have to explain how they are so tasty fried in cornmeal. And then I'm stuck down here craving fried lil oily fish.
