Smile Finest Kind and other Maine Sayings?

I just read "The Wooden Nickel" a pretty good story about a Maine lobsterman. Various characters in that book use the phrase "Finest Kind." Just what does a Mainer mean when he says "Finest Kind?" Hard to figure out in context of that book--maybe used ironically.

Maine is such a unique place. I bet there are a lot of phrases that are heard only (or mostly) in Maine. Have any favorites? Want to help out those of us "from away" (we know that one!), so we can speak properly when we get to Maine?

"...so cheap, he'd skin a fart for the hide and tallow" but true confession, this may not be Maine--I heard it in NH and loved it along with the other piece of folk widom...."ya can't ---- higher than the hole" which may be practical privy advice or could mean trying to say more than you know.

Default Question

"numma than a hake" ---really, really stupid!"

I am taking "hake" to be a flounder or flat fish, is that correct?

for some of these sayings we may need some translation or explaination.
