You said you wanted to go to the coast(your words were: "....over to the ocean for a bit"). MDI stands for Mount Desert Island, which is the home of Acadia National Park. Its home to such towns as Bar Harbor, Southwest Harbor, Northeast Harbor, and Seal Harbor. Although some of the park is closed now to cars for winter. Not all though; some of the park loop is open as long as there is no snow. Park Service doesn't do plowing. There's lotsa stuff to do on "MDI" in the winter, and lotsa restaurants are open.

Of course, you could zip over to Belfast or Bucksport. Many of the touristy stuff there also is closed.

When are you planning on arriving on the coast?

IMO Mount Desert Island is much more of a tourist destination than Augusta. Google it and you will get much information. What month is this trip? I see that you prefer August over Bangor but don't dismiss it out of hand. We now have a Casino and the new Cross Center, loads of restaurants that are NOT chains and there is also the University of Maine Art Museum right in town.

From Augusta, get on up to Rt 2 west. Follow that to St. Johnsbury, Vermont, then take I 91 north. That will take you into Canada and should be fairly quick.

Think I have my problem solved, thanks to all, let me tell you of my plans, Drive to Maine, stay around Augusta, take a short trip (1 or 2 days) over to the ocean closest to Augusta (matters not where) then back to Augusta/Bangor then on to Montreal via the U.S. route, stay a few days visiting friends, then back to Maine to lurk for a while, then back to Canadaland, sorry for the confusion.

its a lighthouse, you can drive right to it- the ocean right in front of you,,

you can walk on the rocks

From Augusta you could choose to take Rt. 17 to the coast. It's a straight shot East, about an hour's drive. It dumps you in Rockland. From there, you can easily travel Route 1 north or south along the coast.
