Therapists get paid good money to listen to the scripts repeated endlessly about the issues that the client won't change or doesn't have the ego strength to address and resolve.
Friends and family and neighbors get worn down and don't want to hear it over and over. Don't go to Alaska or Northern New England and complain that its cold in the winter, or to Africa and complain that its hot; don't complain to fish that its wet. They probably know it and either like it that way or are dealing with it.

I took a massive cut in pay when making the decision to move to Maine: I retired.
Had I pursued a continuing professional career, I would today be earning ten times my current income level. And I have had job offers.
I wanted to live here, so I am living here.
It is not good for anyone to live in misery, and it is not good for those near you to deal with you when you are miserable.
Few adults are in situations where their circumstances are outside of their control. A person wrongly accused of a crime and sitting in prison. Would be an example of such. But even then, it remains their choice to be miserable or not.
Only the individual can be responsible for their own happiness. To project misery onto everyone else, is akin to vomiting on them.
Few people truly enjoy being vomited onto.

You can't just give them back the car. I have a plan and that's what's important. Pay off the car...maybe a year or 2 early even and then keep on saving my money so I can afford to make the move. Even if it takes me 3-4 years before I can actually move I am at least making the plan.
Of course if I do get the police officers job I am applying for then I don't know what I would do. It would be a job I have been dreaming about for a long time and with the increase in pay and benefits I could afford to have a really good living here. Maybe I won't be rich but I will have enough to survive on. Of course if I did still decide to move it would be pretty easy to transfer to a department in Florida too. So either way I have some things lining up.
Right now the good news for me is rain and warmer temps coming this week to melt some of this snow!!

Peter, I am a strong believer in giving positive reinforcement to "steps in the right direction" (successive approximation); so here goes.
You Are to Be Commended for having a plan; for setting goals and for working toward their fulfillment. Keep It Up. Attaboy!
I wish you success and happiness in all you do!

That sounds like a good plan. Do what you can and make it happen. Life will always be tough without high demand job skills. (Particularly so in our present economy.) Also, see if you can be a bit creative and add a second income. Or maybe you can shave a bit more off your food costs, cheaper rent?.
I know that sometimes when you are in a "safe" place, even though you are real unhappy, it's hard to make the changes. IMO, the misery is really the sign that you will be making changes soon.
I hope you get the police job!

I can't wait when I am able to afford to move to a warmer climate because Maine isn't for me.

Maybe you could talk to the folks in warm places about a possible home swap...
