Default obtaining a maine drivers lisence at 18

I have heard several mixed stories about how to get a lisence. I am 18, do i need to get a permit first, if so how long do i have to have it? or can i just go to the DMV and get my lisence? I really need some help on this one so any help would be great. thanks

Look here.

This message is too short so I'm typing fluff so the board will approve it.

Never really thought about it, but its kinda crazy that someone 18 or any age can just get a driver licence, take cash and buy a car and hit the road with no training or instruction from anyone. Its legal, im not debating it, just kinda scary.

Kinda makes me wonder about the bad drivers I see on the road.

(I added the bold) No it isn't. You have to have a permit first for at least 6 months, and have a minimum amount of hours behind the wheel both daylight and night before you can get a license if you are under 21. The link "Maine Writer" provided spells it all out in detail.

You definitely need a permit first. Maine just doesn't go handing out driver licenses like they are candy.

Default well

How do I obtain my first driver's license? To obtain a driver's license you must successfully complete a driver knowledge examination and vision screening. You must be at least 16 years of age and have completed an approved driver education course. If you are 18 years of age or older you are not required to complete driver education. You must successfully complete a road test. If you are under 21 years of age, you are required to complete 35 hours of practice driving, which must include five hours of night driving, and have held your instruction permit for at least six months. You will pay a much lower rate for insurance if you take a driver ed course before you apply for a permit.
