It is exactly how you described it though, the squint and stare and not a curler in sight! Too funny... I have another question but will start a new thread so this doesn't get deleted for OT!
The web page for the t-shirts is a good one. I ordered a mug from them last year and it arrived early, lots of cute stuff.

i do like the town of bath,,, tho it seems fragmented,, and many of our coastal towns,,is a tale of two cities,,,,like a postcard, on one side of the postcard, is the beautiful waterfront homes, and rich history on the other, many struggling natives, (with all our vices) just trying to get by,

We have lived in 7 other states and "vices" are everywhere, in comparison to New Orleans I will take the "squirrely" stare over the "I am going to stab, shoot, and **** you" stare any day! It does seem to happen more in Topsham and Brunswick more than Bath though. Folks are real friendly around town and at the park.

when i first started travelling to the small towns in maine, id stop at a diner or cafe' for a bite to eat,,,and would get the stares,,,sometimes i still do,,then inevitably, you'd hear a voice call out "where ya from"? or "what brings you to town"?
most times id just make small talk,,and go on eating,
if im stressed out,,dont want to be bothered, or if someone is kinda rude,,i thought of the perfect retort, a one liner,,that will give them quite a stir..
10 yrs ago i was getting the stares and got the question,,what brings ya here??
i turned, and in a deep, slow voice said, "im looking for my birth mother"
the place goes silent,,,the ladies looked at me,,thinking who i looked like,,and usually thiers a fella that will pipe up and say "i bet he is norma's(any females name) boy, she was quite a breeder, was pregnant for 12 yrs straight, would've been easy for her to give one of them away without no one knowing"..,,then the locals will go back and forth speculating,,its quite comical,,,they'd ask ..who it is im looking for,,and i said out of respect i wouldnt say....i did this three times,,with similar comical results,

I would laugh myself off my chair if I was in the place. Worse part is, I can picture the reaction. Every town has a "Norma" I think. That would be a great one to pull in the Valley, even better if you could say it in French with a straight face.

LOL! So that isn't just a southern thang! I have actually gotten used to it, now it only bothers my son. You know, the insecurity of youth...

Can you recommend...?
Friends -
I am relocating to Portland in October, 2008. I'd like to have a savings account in place when I get there but one bank (Maine Bank and Trust) has refused my application because I am not a resident.
Am I likely to run into this with most Portland banks? Would I have better luck with credit unions? Do you have an institution you'd recommend without qualification?
Thanks,
M.

We have an account that we set up online and through the mail with Bangor Savings Bank. It was no trouble at all.

Bank North?
I showed NC driver's license and didn't have a problem at Bank North.

and I started my account at the Down East Credit Union when I was there this spring; my mailing address is NC as is my drivers license. Told them I was plotting to move...
