Speaking of bright colored walls, I have noticed that some houses either for rent or sale do have these really BRIGHT colors, blue, green, yellow. I guess I am just use to neutral colors. And particular reason for this?

When I moved into a house years (many many) ago, the livingroom was bubblegum pink, The kitchen screaming yellow and the 3 season porch day-glow green. The woman that had owned the house said they were "cheery".

Actually El, a lot of people like the old world look, even in Maine. You could probably still use your furnishings, if you still like them, and save yourself some serious money. Not everyone decorates in cottage style by any means, it's actually very expensive to do that style if you start buying all new pieces from places like LL Bean or Maine Cottage.
On the other hand, if you want to toss it all and start fresh, by all means GO FOR IT!! Starting over with a whole new style is so much fun and hey, you could start right in by improving the Maine economy

I love antiques and the antique style. That will not change in the least. But the Spanish and Italian style of so many homes here is very different than simple antique. I'd love the antique farmhouse look, I think.

I do not recall seeing the washing machine, it must have been out back.

I have noticed some lovely homes with really garish color schemes too--at least they look that way to me. Pink and purple bedrooms and electic blue walls and screaming yellow hallways. They look a bit like Homer and Marge Simpson's house. I figured it might have something to do with long dark winters. But let it be said I have seen many other homes that were absolutely beautiful and made me think, my furniture wouldn't be up to snuff in that home and we would have to do some really creative shopping in consignment shops (You Do Have Consignment Stores don't you?)

My neighbors house is purple w/green trim.
Our house had bright turquoise shutters when we bought it and all the interior colors were VERY dark except one BRIGHT pink bedroom. Lots of dark purple/blue, even in the kitchen. It looked like a tomb even with 19 windows!
Antiques are a good way to go up here especially if you are moving here from a shopping mecca. Shopping is a bit more limited here compared to other areas, but there are antique stores EVERYWHERE!
